Keep the packaging, code slip and receipt. First decide whether the damage affects only the box, makes the code unreadable, or leaves the code missing. Contact the seller about the delivered product; use platform support for a code or account error. Do not redeem a readable code if you want to return the whole unopened purchase, and never post the code in public.
Worth knowing first
- Save evidence before discarding packaging.
- Keep packaging damage, missing contents and redemption errors separate.
- Do not expose a code or redeem it elsewhere as a test.
| What you see | First action | Keep private |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked case; code still covered | Ask seller about packaging remedy before redemption | Unrevealed code and receipt |
| No code slip inside | Check inserts, then report missing contents to seller | Order details and package photos |
| Code characters rubbed off | Stop scratching; request damaged-code help | Both sides of voucher |
| Readable code says already used | Check owning account and transaction history | Complete code and account details |
A broken box and a broken purchase are different problems
Imagine you bought the box as a birthday present. The parcel arrives with a crushed corner, and the game case has a crack. Your first question is probably whether GTA VI will still work. Rockstar says the announced retail box contains a download code, without a disc. A cracked case therefore does not tell you that game files are damaged. What matters for access is whether the correct unused code is present, readable and accepted by the right platform account.
That does not make packaging damage unimportant. You may have paid for a new collectible box or planned to give it to someone. A readable code can solve the playing problem while leaving the gift problem unresolved. Explain both parts to the seller. If you care about replacing the complete item, stop before redemption and ask how opening or using the code would affect the seller's return process. Those conditions depend on the purchase; there is no single worldwide rule for every shop.
Keep the evidence before tidying up
Take a clear picture of the shipping package, its damaged area, the label and the game case. Keep the outer package until the seller tells you whether it is needed. If the seal was torn on arrival, photograph that too. Use ordinary lighting and show the whole item as well as a close view. You are trying to show what arrived, not to make the damage look worse. A few useful pictures are better than many blurry ones.
Save the order confirmation, invoice and delivery date alongside the photos. If you have already opened the box, say so. Do not arrange it to look sealed again. Write down whether the code slip was present when you first checked. If several people handled the parcel, ask what they saw before deciding that an item was never included. A short, honest account makes it easier for support to separate shipping damage, missing contents and damage caused while revealing the code.
If only the packaging is damaged
Look at the product without revealing or entering the code. Is the case cracked, the cover torn or the outer sleeve bent? Does the listing describe a special box that now has damage? Make the request about that specific fault. You can ask what remedies the seller offers, such as a replacement case, exchange or another resolution. Do not assume the shop has spare packaging or that any one remedy must be available.
Decide what matters most to you before accepting a solution. If you want a clean gift, a small allowance may not solve the problem. If you mainly want to play and the code is intact, replacing the whole purchase may create an unnecessary delivery wait. Ask the seller whether you can redeem the code while the packaging issue is being handled, and keep the reply. Do not treat the ability to read the code as permission to use it and later return it as unused.
If the code slip is missing
Check both sides of inserts, inside the case and the empty shipping package. A thin slip can sit behind a cover or cling to another sheet. Read the seller's delivery description too: a separate code email and a code inside a box are different promises. If the order explicitly supplies a boxed code, finding a parcel does not by itself mean you received everything you bought. Do not confuse the absence of a disc with a fault; the absence of the promised game code is the relevant issue.
Contact the seller through your order page and explain that the code is absent, rather than reporting a generic download failure. Include the order number, product name, delivery date and what you found inside. If the box looked opened, say when you noticed it. An empty case cannot prove which account owns a game, so platform support cannot simply turn it into a purchase. The seller needs to investigate what was supplied. Our missing delivery guide covers parcels that never reached you.
If scratching made the code hard to read
Stop rubbing once printed characters start lifting or tearing. Trying harder can remove the part that support needs to inspect. Keep every piece if the paper tears. Try viewing the existing print under a different light without adding liquid, heat or chemicals. Photograph the front and back privately. Do not upload the image to a forum so strangers can guess the missing letters; enough visible characters may expose information you should keep to yourself.
PlayStation's official voucher guide distinguishes a code printed on a receipt from other damaged vouchers. A receipt code goes back to the retailer for recovery. For other damaged PlayStation vouchers, its support team asks for purchase details and may request the receipt and images of both sides. This is a route for investigation, not a promise that every damaged code will be replaced. For Xbox, start with the seller and the official Microsoft code-help route linked below, stating that characters are unreadable rather than inventing an error message.
A readable code can fail for a different reason
If the full code is readable, check it against what you entered once, character by character. Copying from an email can introduce spaces, and a photo can make similar letters look alike. Read the platform printed on the product and confirm the signed-in account before trying again. Keep the exact error text. Invalid, already redeemed and wrong region point to different checks; calling all three a damaged code can send your request down the wrong path.
For a PlayStation country error, compare the GTA VI code's licensed country group with the account country. Rockstar lists specific groups for this game. Its same guide says GTA VI Xbox codes are not region locked, so do not apply a generic wallet-card country restriction to an Xbox game code without checking the product. A store outage can also interrupt an otherwise correct attempt. If there is a known service problem, repeated guesses will not repair it. The region error guide explains that branch in more detail.
Already redeemed does not tell the whole story
Before accusing anyone of selling a used code, inspect the account used during the first attempt. A confirmation may have succeeded even if the next screen failed to load. Check its game library and purchase or transaction history. In a household with several accounts, ask which person was signed in on the phone, browser and console. Those devices can remember different people. If the game was added to one of your accounts, entering the code again cannot create a second copy.
If you cannot find a successful redemption, keep the error screenshot, receipt and packaging for a private support request. State that you do not recognize a previous redemption. Do not present a sealed-looking case as proof of a code's whole history; packaging and digital status are separate. The platform can investigate its redemption system, while the seller handles the item it supplied. If you discover the wrong owning account, use our wrong-account guide before spending more.
Send the right details to the right place
Use the support route on the genuine seller or platform website. A delivery problem belongs with the order handler. A readable code rejected by the platform needs the platform's code troubleshooting, with the seller informed if the product itself appears wrong. Rockstar's game information can confirm format and compatibility, but that does not make Rockstar the handler of every independent retail parcel. Look at your receipt to find who took the order.
A useful first message could read: 'My order [number] arrived on [date]. The GTA VI [platform] box has [damage]. The code slip is [present and unreadable / missing / readable but rejected]. I have kept the package and receipt. Please tell me how to submit photos privately and whether I should leave the code unredeemed.' This gives support a clear starting point. It does not ask them to infer a problem from a picture of an entire messy desk.
Protect the code while a case is open
Keep complete code photos in your own files and submit them only through a verified private support route when requested. Hide code characters before posting a public review. Hide your address, phone number and payment information too. A receipt image can still show the order number and date in a private case without being made public. Never send an account password or a sign-in approval code to someone offering to test whether a game code works.
Avoid submitting the code to an unofficial checking website. You do not need a stranger to redeem it as an experiment. Also avoid trying it on a friend's account: if it works, you have changed the problem from code access to ownership. Keep a note of the case number, what you supplied and the next promised update. If support asks you to return the item, follow the actual return instructions and keep the tracking proof rather than throwing away the slip after photographing it.
Do not buy a second copy to prove the first is faulty
Buying again can leave you with two purchases before the first case is settled. It also does not establish why the old code failed. If launch timing makes a second purchase tempting, first ask the seller whether the original order can be cancelled or returned and what conditions apply. Make the cost decision knowing that reimbursement is unresolved. Keep the two orders separate if you go ahead, so support can see exactly which item is in dispute.
When the issue is resolved, check the agreed result. For a replacement, inspect the new packaging and redeem on the intended account. For a successful code investigation, verify the game in that account's library. For a refund, check the payment record when the seller says it has been processed. Then keep the receipt and close the support case. The aim is a usable purchase and a clear outcome, not simply a chat message saying somebody will look into it.
