THE SHORT ANSWER

Use the space requirement shown by your own console when GTA VI becomes available to download. No confirmed install size is used in this guide. Make room on storage that can run current-generation games, keep saved progress separate from game files, and compare moving older games with buying more storage. A large USB drive is not automatically a place you can play GTA VI from.

Worth knowing first

  • Use your console's current requirement rather than a rumored file size.
  • Treat game files and saved progress as different things.
  • Check whether a drive can run the game before spending money.

Start with free space, not the number on the box

Open your console's storage screen before shopping for anything. The capacity advertised when you bought the console tells you the size of the storage device, not how much room you have today. System files, installed games, apps and captured videos all use some of it. A console described as having a terabyte of storage can still have very little free room. Write down the free space on each device separately. If you have an external drive attached, include its name so you do not accidentally treat its space as spare room inside the console.

On PS5, go to Settings, then Storage. Compare the console storage figure with any M.2 SSD or USB extended storage listed there. On Xbox, open the console's storage management screen and look at the device where you plan to install the game. The useful question is whether that location has enough usable space. Adding up room from two drives does not make one larger installation location. If one device is almost full while another has spare room, you need to choose a suitable destination or move something. The console cannot treat two unrelated empty spaces as one slot for a game.

Where to find the GTA VI size you should actually use

Do not prepare your storage around a screenshot with an unexplained number. This guide does not assign GTA VI a download or install size. When the store and installation screen show the requirement for your version, use that information. On PS5, PlayStation directs users to the game's product details for minimum free space. The number on an actual installation prompt also matters because it describes what the console needs for the operation you are trying to complete. Save a note of that requirement and compare it with the free room on the chosen device.

A download amount, an installed amount and space needed while an update is being applied describe different things. Imagine a made-up game that downloads 90 GB but occupies 110 GB after installation. A later update could need more working space while old files are being replaced. These are examples of why different screens can show different numbers, not GTA VI measurements. Avoid treating a smaller network download as proof that the whole installation will fit. If the console asks for more room, follow its stated requirement rather than trying to force the job into the number you expected.

Storage and internet data are two separate budgets

Free storage is room inside a device. Your internet data allowance is how much information your provider lets you download or upload over a period. A new drive solves the first problem; it does not raise the second limit. If your home connection has a monthly cap, check the remaining allowance before the download begins. Also leave room in that allowance for the rest of your household. A game may fit comfortably on a console while its download uses a large share of a small internet plan.

This distinction helps when deciding what to remove. Deleting a game you will soon want back can create another large download later. Moving its files to a supported spare drive may make more sense when you already own that drive, especially with a limited connection. If the real concern is finishing the download in time, our slow internet guide explains planning around your measured connection. Do the space check first so a long transfer does not fail near the end for a reason you could have fixed before it started.

PS5: a USB drive can be a shelf rather than a play location

PlayStation makes an important distinction between storing PS5 games and playing them. PS5 game files on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before play. A USB drive can therefore help you park other PS5 games while making room inside the console. It is not the same purchase as an M.2 SSD that adds a supported location for playing PS5 games. If an advert simply says a drive works with PS5, ask what that means: holding files, running PS4 games, or running PS5 games.

You may not need any new hardware. If you mainly intend to play GTA VI for a while, keep space inside the console for it and move a game you are taking a break from. If you regularly switch among several large PS5 games and dislike moving them, an M.2 upgrade may solve a repeated problem. Before buying, compare the exact model against Sony's current requirements, including its physical fit and heat management. Do not choose only by capacity or an impressive speed printed on a box. Installation guidance differs by console model, so use the instructions for your own PS5.

Xbox: check what the drive connects to

Xbox's internal SSD and supported Storage Expansion Cards provide storage designed for Series X|S games. Xbox also describes USB storage as useful for keeping next-generation game files for transfer. Treat GTA VI planning as a current-generation installation: reserve space on the internal drive or a supported expansion card, then follow the game's actual store and console requirements. Do not buy a USB drive on an assumption that it will run GTA VI directly. A card fitted to the console's storage expansion slot and a drive plugged into USB are different kinds of product.

If you already own a USB drive, it may still save you money by holding games you are not currently playing. Before moving anything, check how the console describes the destination and whether the game must be moved again to launch. If you are buying a card, verify that the exact product is compatible with Xbox Series X|S and inspect its warranty and return conditions. You do not need to spend more just because a seller puts GTA VI in the listing title. The console's storage rules are the useful part of the decision; the game name on an accessory advert does not establish compatibility.

Remove the installation you need least, not your progress

Think of installed game files as the book, and a saved game as your bookmark and notes. They serve different jobs. When cleaning space, choose the game's installation rather than saved progress. Read each confirmation screen because a storage menu can offer separate options for games, saves and other data. Do not select everything simply because you recognize the game's name. If you are unsure which item is which, leave it alone and remove a different installation you can clearly identify. A few extra minutes spent choosing is better than losing progress you wanted to keep.

A sensible removal order begins with things you have finished or do not expect to use soon. Check large recordings next, but copy any clips you want to keep before removing them. Do not assume every cloud backup has completed, or that a subscription includes the backup feature you need. Verify the save protection available on your platform before a major cleanup. Sony lists saved data separately from game data and gives PS Plus cloud storage its own rules. Keeping a game on USB extended storage is not a backup of its PS5 save.

A small rotation can be better value than a large upgrade

List the games you truly want installed during the first few weeks of GTA VI. There may be fewer than you think. Keep a family favorite that someone uses every evening, a small game you play with friends and the new release. Move or remove the rest if that creates enough space. A drive upgrade is useful when it solves regular inconvenience. It is harder to justify when you only need one temporary slot and already have games you will not touch for months. This is a spending decision as much as a storage decision.

For example, suppose you have one large game you finished and another you open most weekends. Removing the finished game's installation is usually the simpler first choice. If both matter and your connection is costly or capped, a drive you already own may be a better parking place. If you have several people using the console, ask which installations are in active use before cleaning. That quick check can prevent you from freeing space for your new game by creating a long download for someone else. None of these examples requires knowing GTA VI's eventual size.

A box does not take the download out of the plan

Rockstar says GTA VI's retail box contains a download code and no disc. Buying that box does not give you an installation that avoids the internet download. After redemption, you still need to obtain the game files and make room for them. If you were considering a box because your connection is limited, revisit that choice before paying. Our digital and boxed format guide explains the practical differences. Packaging can be something you enjoy owning, but it cannot stand in for storage or downloaded files.

Keep the account decision separate as well. Storage space belongs to the console or drive; the redeemed purchase belongs to the account used for the code. Finding a better storage location later does not require buying another copy. If the console is asking you to buy the game rather than asking for free space, stop this storage process and check ownership. Our license error guide covers that different problem. More room on a drive will not fix a purchase sitting in another account.

What to check if the console still says there is not enough room

Return to the selected installation location and check its free-space figure again. A move may still be in progress, the wrong drive may be selected, or another download may have taken the space you just cleared. Compare the new requirement with the current figure rather than relying on the number you saw earlier. If the console identifies a particular amount to free, clear at least that amount and try again. Leave some spare room when practical so the console is not immediately pushed back to its limit by the next operation.

If there is enough room on a suitable device but the transfer repeatedly stops, write down the error and whether other games install there. Do not format the device as a first response: formatting removes its contents and can create more work without identifying the cause. Check the platform's support guidance for that exact error. For a download that is paused, queued or frozen, continue with our stuck download guide. The goal is a game installed on a usable location with your other progress protected, not a completely empty console.
