Standard buys GTA VI itself. Ultimate adds the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, including vehicles, weapons, style options, special destinations and extra activities. The announced US prices are $79.99 and $99.99. Choose Standard when the extras do not matter to you; choose Ultimate when its named additions justify your local price difference.
Worth knowing first
- Ultimate includes activities and destinations as well as items and styling.
- Compare your local final totals; the US announcement is a reference.
- Standard owners have a separate upgrade route, with its own price to check.

Choose for the way you will play
The useful question is what you want from your time in Leonida. If your main reason for buying is to follow Jason and Lucia's story, explore the world and enjoy the base game, start by looking at Standard. You do not need to choose the more expensive edition simply because you want a long, enjoyable adventure. If you like hunting down extra cars, trying special activities and giving your characters a more personal look, Ultimate deserves a closer look. Read its contents before you decide how much those things are worth to you.
A higher edition can feel like the safe choice when a game is this anticipated. Nobody wants to discover later that they missed something they would have loved. Here, however, Rockstar has announced a separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade for Standard owners. That gives you a useful way to manage the decision: buy the base game if you are unsure, then consider the add-on when you have a clearer idea of what you enjoy. Keeping that choice open is different from promising that a later upgrade will be cheaper.
Ultimate includes more than outfits
Calling Ultimate a cosmetic pack would leave out part of the offer. The official PlayStation description includes the PTT Youngin$ Compound activity and a Classic Car Collection commission, alongside vehicles, weapons, clothing and appearance options. It also identifies special places that open for Ultimate owners, such as Rideout Customs and Sara's Unisex Salon. That makes this a choice about some extra things to do and places to use, as well as how characters and vehicles look. Those additions still need to interest you personally to justify their cost.
Look at the named contents in groups rather than reading a long list as if every line has equal value. A player who enjoys collecting and restoring cars may care much more about a car activity than a hairstyle. Someone who likes customizing vehicles might value a special workshop. Another player may mainly follow the story and rarely change an outfit. Neither person is choosing badly. The list helps when you connect each addition to something you actually enjoy, rather than assigning a price to every marketing bullet.
Rockstar says the extras appear through the story, with new items becoming available across chapters. Do not expect every included vehicle or activity to sit in front of you the moment the game opens. The edition listing explains the package; it is not a promise that all its contents arrive at once. If one particular item is your reason to pay more, read its description carefully. Avoid assuming it provides a certain amount of playtime or a measured gameplay advantage when the listing does not give that information.
Compare the real price difference
The US announcement sets a useful reference: $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate, a difference of $20 before any relevant checkout adjustments. That tells you what the publisher announced for that market. Your own decision should use the two totals shown for your account country, platform and payment method. A currency conversion of the US announcement is not a local offer. If you are comparing sellers, make sure both totals cover the same platform and delivery method.
Use a simple test: if the store offered to sell you the Ultimate additions on their own for the difference you see today, would you want them? Try answering without the edition names on screen. If you would rather keep that money, Standard is a sensible result. If the special activities and other additions already sound worth that amount, Ultimate may fit. A difference that feels small to one person can be meaningful to another, especially when they are also buying a console or paying for internet access.
Standard now and an upgrade later
The separate upgrade route helps an undecided buyer, but it needs its own price check. Compare direct Ultimate against Standard plus the current separate add-on price if that add-on is available for purchase in your store. Do not assume that the add-on must cost exactly the gap between the two editions. An announced bundle difference does not establish a standalone price. If the store does not show a purchasable upgrade with a price, leave that total unknown rather than filling it with a guess.
Be equally careful if you already ordered Standard. Check the edition shown in your account library and transaction history before buying anything else. The named Ultimate Edition Upgrade is the relevant product to investigate, rather than a second full copy of the game. Read the add-on's platform and ownership requirements. If the store does not recognize your base purchase, pause and investigate the account or order status. Buying another full edition immediately can turn a small edition decision into an avoidable duplicate charge.
A box changes the purchase route
Rockstar's announced retail box contains a download code, with no disc. The boxed edition is Standard; a physical Ultimate Edition is not listed as available. You can redeem boxed Standard and then buy the digital Ultimate upgrade through the relevant platform store. For someone who likes having packaging on a shelf, that offers a route to a box and the extra content. It involves two purchases, so the total needs to include both rather than only the box's attractive headline price.
The box also means you should think about the account that will receive the code. Packaging cannot turn a PlayStation purchase into an Xbox copy, and a redeemed code is not a disc you can pass to a friend. Compare a boxed Standard plus upgrade route with direct digital Ultimate only after you have matched platform, account compatibility and delivery timing. If the box costs more overall, decide whether the packaging itself is worth that amount to you. There is no need to invent another benefit to justify liking a collectible object.
Keep bonuses and subscriptions out of the edition gap
A preorder promotion and an edition upgrade answer different questions. If the same limited-time pack appears with both eligible Standard and Ultimate orders, it does not explain why Ultimate costs more. Put shared benefits on both sides of the comparison, then look at the extra things Ultimate supplies. This keeps an eye-catching promotional banner from making the expensive edition look as if it alone includes every benefit shown on the page.
Apply the same care to any included GTA+ month. A subscription offer has its own redemption and renewal conditions. It does not turn a temporary membership into permanent ownership of every game or benefit in that service. Read those terms separately, especially if you do not plan to keep subscribing. For the edition choice, focus on the game and the Ultimate upgrade. For the promotion choice, check whether you qualify and what you need to do to receive it.
Which edition fits three common buyers?
If you want the story and expect to explore at your own pace, Standard is a strong starting point. You can make the optional-content decision later without delaying the whole purchase. If you are the kind of player who searches every corner, builds a car collection and spends time on character styling, read the Ultimate activity and destination list in full. It may fit your plans well, but the name alone cannot tell you whether the extra content is worth your local price.
For a gift, compatibility comes before generosity. Confirm the recipient's console, account country and whether they already ordered the game. Then ask about their interest in extras if doing so will not spoil the surprise. A correct Standard copy that they can use beats an unwanted duplicate of Ultimate. If they already own Standard, look at the upgrade instead of assuming a full Ultimate purchase is the right gift. Keep the receipt and avoid redeeming a code into your own account while preparing the present.
Make the final check once
Before paying, read the full product name, edition, platform and total on the final order screen. For a retail purchase, add delivery and check when the code will arrive. Save the confirmation after the order succeeds. If you chose Standard, you do not need to keep rechecking the expensive edition every day; you have made a reasonable decision using your current priorities. If you chose Ultimate, the useful reason is that you want its named additions and accept the price, rather than a vague fear of missing out.
